Today, we are posting on behalf of a charming young scientist Eva and the author of the science blog on Instagram @sciencenstyle. She shared her bachelors thesis results with us:
"My lab studies the assembly of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. They found that the these complexes are not assembled in a completely linear way, rather they are assembled by the formation of several independent sub-complexes (each consisting of 1-3 of the protein subunits) that interact with one another to form the mature complex. I wanted to see whether this same nonlinear pathway of assembly applied to another complex in the respiratory chain- complex III. My studies indicate that complex III follows a nonlinear pathway of assembly, as multiple sub-complexes were found using co-immunoprecipitation and radiolabeling. This is interesting from an evolutionary standpoint because the sub-complexes imply that they may have had functions independent of the mature complex III prior in evolution."
